MILK EXPERIMENT

Did you know that milk is around 87% water?! We have learned about the different substances in milk, and know that different milks have different amounts of fat and protein in them. We wondered how the different amounts of protein and fat would effect the movement of food coloring when dish washing liquid is added.

The detergent breaks down the top layer or skin of the milk, allowing the food coloring to flow. Then a chemical reaction takes place between the detergent and fat, and the detergent and protein. This causes rapid movement of the milk.

We noticed that the reaction was stronger in creamy milk, but the food coloring flowed more quickly to the edges of the dish in the less creamy, low fat milk.

  2. Looks like fun! I remember doing this experiment with the boys when they were little, but I didn't know all the science in it!

  3. Doing the experiments was so fun! I hope we can do more fun stuff like that, but not involving drinking it, please. I really don't like milk.
