We are learning what we can do to keep ourselves safe at the beach, and what to do if we get into trouble in the surf. As an introduction to this topic, we brainstormed in groups to find out what we already know about beach safety:
Flags:
- Surf Lifeguards place the flags
- They are placed in areas that are patrolled and are the safest to swim in
- We should always swim between the flags
- You should attach the leash to your wrist and hold onto the board firmly
- It is safe to catch waves where the water is up to your waist
- You should use fins so you have the power to move fast and get out of trouble
- Wear red and yellow clothing so they can be recognised
- Their role is to supervise the area between the flags and to help us if we're in trouble
- They are experts so we should listen to what they tell us so we can stay safe
- If you need help you put your hand straight up in the air.
- Rips are areas where the water is moving out to sea
- You need to beware of them as they can take you out into deep water
