Marae Stayover

Room 5 and the rest of the Halcombe School Senior Team stayed overnight at Taumata O Te Ra Marae in Halcombe on Thursday evening. We were welcomed onto the marae with a powhiri, during which we sang Tutira Mai Nga Iwi. Our practice certainly paid off! In the whare kai we enjoyed an amazing dinner before taking part in some activities. These included presenting our own family connections visually and orally with George, whilst others learned a number of traditional maori games from Awhina.

Sleeping together in the whare tipuna was a great experience and we all managed to get a great night's sleep! By 7:15 we were outside for a morning run and exercises before enjoying another fantastic breakfast feed. There was even time to do some observational drawings of the incredible carvings and artwork before we were farewelled and returned to school. We would like to thank George, Awhina and their team for their amazing hospitality during our stay. Here are a few photos from the visit:

  1. I liked going for the morning run and I liked the breakfast it was yum. I hated going to sleep because somebody was kicking me while they were asleep. Everything else was fun. I learnt not to touch the carvings.

    1. It wasn't my fault Natalie I do fidget at night and you should see the picture of me and Sophie asleep, but you have to go to Miss Simpson because shes the one that took it. Natalie the morning run was HORRIBLE!!!!! My feet were freezing so badly I couldn't feel them at all. Breakfast YUM it was soo YUM I wanted to go up and get more. The Marae stay was the best in the world. Thanks George, Awhina and the rest.

  2. What an amazing experience, one I think every New Zealand child should have. Halcombe school is very blessed to have a wonderful Marae so close.
